Why can ChatGPT get PSX data wrong?

The problem is usually not that the model cannot explain a financial concept. The problem is that an answer about the Pakistan Stock Exchange needs current, structured source data. Without that source, the model may combine an old web page, an approximate memory, and a calculation that does not match the way PSX investors measure returns.

Confidence is not proof. A clean paragraph can still contain the wrong date, an outdated price, or a number from a different reporting period.

Five common failure points

1. The market price is old

“What is this stock trading at?” is a time-sensitive question. A price from yesterday’s close, a price from an old article, and an intraday quote are different facts. Ask for the timestamp and session status whenever the question is about today’s market.

2. A return ignores dividends or bonus shares

Price change alone does not always describe a shareholder’s experience. A company may have paid cash dividends or issued bonus shares during the period. Ask whether a result is price return or total return, and whether corporate actions were included.

3. Financial periods are mixed

An annual revenue figure, a quarterly profit, and a trailing-twelve-month ratio should never be silently combined. Ask the assistant to show the reporting period, unit, and whether a figure is reported or derived.

4. Sector context is missing

A bank, fertilizer company, technology company, and mutual fund require different comparisons. A ratio can look attractive or weak depending on the business model and the peer group.

5. The source does not cover the requested dataset

General AI may not have current FIPI/LIPI flows, disclosed fund holdings, official NAV dates, or a newly published PSX filing. A responsible answer should say that the dataset is unavailable instead of inventing a precise number.

A simple validation checklist

When ChatGPT gives you a PSX number, ask follow-up questions:

1. What is the exact date and time of this figure?
2. Is this a reported number or a calculation?
3. What unit is being used?
4. Which filing, exchange source, fund report, or CPI publication supports it?
5. Does the return include cash dividends and bonus shares?
6. Are the companies being compared from the same sector and reporting period?
